NCAA BCS Championship: Is it really the top 2 teams?by Jon Starz 12/23/2006

The Bowl season is among us and it came with great controversy. Ohio State vs Florida in the National Championship provides the country with what many in the media wanted to see. The problem is though that Florida is not the second best team in the country. I am tired of hearing all of the naysayers telling us that Michigan had their chance and lost. Now lets look at that. Michigan was 7 point underdogs at Ohio State the number 1 team in the country. The Buckeyes were the only team all year to outstat the Wolverines but still won by only 3 in their stadium. Take a peek at Florida and you find they were outstatted by LSU, South Carolina and Vanderbilt all W's and also by Auburn, their only loss of the season. Michigan outstatted the Commodores this season and won by 20 while the Gators were fortunate to escape with a 6 point victory.

How about the chain theory. Michigan lost to the number 1 team in the country and they lost to... no one the chain stops. Florida lost to Auburn by 10. Auburn lost to Arkansas by 17. Arkansas lost to USC by 36. USC lost to Oregon State by 2. Oregon State lost to Boise State by 28. Boise lost to.. no one. So maybe it should be Boise in the BCS Championship Game as the chain shows.

Now lets try the chain and see how bad it can get. Michigan lost to the number 1 team in the country and they lost to... no one the chain stops. That's bad. Florida lost to Auburn. Auburn lost to Arkansas. Arkansas lost to USC. USC lost to UCLA. UCLA lost to Washington. Washington lost to Stanford. Stanford lost to San Jose State. San Jose State lost to Nevada. Nevada lost to Fresno State. Fresno State lost to Colorado State. Colorado State lost to San Diego State. San Diego State lost to Cal Poly. Cal Poly lost to South Dakota State. South Dakota State lost to Div III Wisconsin-Lacrosse. Ouch. Florida loses in the chain to a DIII team and Michigan can't get any lower than the number 1 team in the country. The chains did not work out for the Gators.

With all of that being said if you are an experienced gambler you know all of that mumbo jumbo is just that. A distraction to take away from your analysis of the game. I personally would like to see what Michigan could do on a neutral field but that opportunity will never occur. Florida gets the chance to beat Ohio State on a neutral field and if they win by 3 does that make them the best team in the country especially if Michigan wallops USC. Well, I don't see Michigan walloping the Trojans so we will have our undisputed national Champion crowned on January 8th.
